Diana P. Wellington Pathways
The Diana P. Wellington Scholarship was created to award a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating female student from Proviso East High School pursuing a cosmetology degree. Special consideration is given to applicants who are teen parents, honoring the spirit and journey of the woman whose name this scholarship bears.
Diana P. Wellington, a proud 1982 graduate of Proviso East, is a respected and beloved figure in the hair industry. Her story is one of determination, resilience, and unwavering commitment to building a better life. As a young teen mother to her daughter, Felicia, Diana refused to let her circumstances define her future. Instead of relying on welfare, she enrolled in night school to study the art of hair care—laying the foundation for what would become a remarkable 40+ year career.
Diana began her work in the basement of her home on 14th Avenue, where she quickly built a loyal clientele. Her talent and reputation grew with her, following her to Chicago, where many Maywood residents continued to seek her out—even when she was once again working from a basement salon. Her dedication and entrepreneurial spirit eventually led her to open Wellington International, the thriving salon she still operates today.
Diana embodies what it means to be homegrown and self-made. She is deeply rooted in her community and is known for uplifting others, always believing that a hand up is not a handout. Her journey reflects the power of perseverance, passion, and purpose.
This scholarship, established in her honor, aims to support the next generation of aspiring cosmetologists—especially those who, like Diana, are determined to rise above challenges and create a future filled with opportunity.
